Child Safety
While researching information for this website I came across disturbing information about products used to kill lice, and I felt the need to share it on this page. This is just a 'heads up!' ... please do your own research and talk to your doctor.
We strongly oppose using any pesticides (pediculicides) to get rid of lice. Do research. We believe the old-fashioned way is best: manually removing lice and nits is the safest way for your child.
Also, believe it or not, we've heard stories about people using lamp oil, gasoline, flea shampoo & powder, kerosene and other dangerous home remedies. (We SAID you wouldn't believe it, right?)
If you do decide to use products that kill the lice, be careful to follow the directions exactly, as these are serious chemicals. Natural products also must be used with caution. These products WORK because they DO have an effect on objects they touch. Research what they DO before using them. Follow directions EXACTLY.
Most of these products are for one-time use. If you need to treat your child more than one time, be sure to tell your doctor what you have used in the past and what you are planning to use.
Do research on the chemicals you are going to use, whether man-made or 'natural.' Don't assume a product described is 'natural' can be used in a casual manner. A more detailed discussion of chemical treatments is in the FAQ by National Pediculosis Association. ( Click here to get needed Adobe Reader)
The link below is to a video of a Good Morning America piece on Lindane. A mother used too much of it and her son is now mentally and physically disabled. Of course, many parents have used these chemicals with no problems, but I feel the need to share this video to emphasize how important it is to be careful and to talk to your doctor.
There is more information about Lindane and other chemicals on our LINKS and FAQ pages.
Good luck & take care.
